Is OCD really genetic?
If you have suffered with OCD for a long period of time, you will likely come to the point when you ask the question "why is this happening to me?" Then the research begins.

So what do you find? Well this depends hugely on where you look for your information. If you look down the mainstream corridors you will probably be offered the solution: OCD is genetic, it is something that is broken in your brain, therefore you can't cure it and it can only be managed through medication and CBT (symptom management.) That kind of makes sense right? OCD often runs in families, if a child has OCD it is likely that one or both parents have it or they have other similar neurotic traits. And perhaps there is a genetic aspect to it. However what I can tell you is that myself and many other people have completely changed our state of mind, removed anxiety and OCD, became more optimistic, stopped catastrophizing and learned to take action in life.

Therefore I believe that OCD is a condition of thinking and behaving in fearful and obsessive ways rather than it being a genetic condition. But what about it running in families? I hear you ask. Well in my experience it has become obvious that our brains are like computers and the software is programmed into us via and experiences and the belief systems that we are exposed to. The earliest programming we receive is most likely from our parents, so if our parents are thinking and behaving in fearful ways and we watch them we will adopt that attitude towards life, it's quite obvious really, how else would we learn?

These two beliefs offer you two very different potential outcomes:

Believing that OCD is genetic means that you are a victim, it means that is something that happened to you and that because it is an issue with your biology there isn't anything you can do to change it. Therefore you won't try. leading you to a life where you feel your power is outside of you and then wanting doctors or medication to fix. (which by the way has a very low success rate.) I also wonder if this mindset that is provided has anything to do with big pharmas influence...

Being open to the possibility that OCD is a learned behaviour empowers you with the feeling that change might be possible. I am evidence that you can let go of OCD so why not you as well? If it was programmed into you, logically is makes sense that it can be programmed out of you by learning to think and behave in new more realistic and positive ways. It is possible to download new software, replacing the old inherited ones from childhood which no longer serve you. Metaphorically you can upgrade yourself and become a person that no longer has to deal with conditions.

If you believe the first option, then there isn't much i can do to help you, but if you have decided that you will no longer be a victim to these conditions and that you will take control of your own recovery and move to becoming the person that deep down you know you can be, I can guide you on the path of recovery towards calmness, happiness and fulfillment!
